Salt Fly Hook Up Collingwood 2017

We got up at 4 oclock in the morning to drive 7 hours to collingwood the top of the south island in golden bay.
Were flyfishing for rayriding kingfish on the flats the kingfish will ride on the back of the black rays and pick up the scraps of the black rays food. Fast forward 7 hours and a stop at the servo we were at collingwood now to do some fishing. We arrived at the collingwood camp and were greated by the camp owner Gary super nice guy fishes most days so a good friend of ours.

My family well atlest Dad my bother and I setup in the little cabin we booked. The next day our friend Ed arrived and was staying with us for the week that we were up here so we started unpacking his stuff in to the cabin later that night we went down to the pub but befor that lets show you the sunset. I hade snapper and chips for diner and a drink I had snapper and chips when we got back it was 11 oclock and we were all ready to pass out so we dremped of what was going to haping in the next day in paradise.

Day 3 of our trip to collingwood we should get to do some fishing today on the flats for kingfish. But mother nature said NO! It was blowing 87 kph on the water. theres no way ill be wading the flats in this wind not even in the boat. So for the day we went over to to west coast to see what the wind was like over that side and a 40 minute drive on an old gravel road and then we popped out of the thick bushland and into Whanganui inlet witch is here. And our decision payed off we lanched the boat and headed around the inlet to hopefully find a kahawai work up if you dont know what a kahawai work up is its a big bait ball full of   smelt and krill and the kahawai are feeding on the bait ball so thats what we call a work up and were using small flys trying to imatate a smelt heres a kahawai with a fly in its mouth.
Even though we were after Kingfish a Kahawai is     always a welcome catch to the boat epechily if it's on the fly rod.

There will be a part two.

Is it true or false?

So in the second week of the holidays Shukoor thought it would be a good idea that I could take him fishing ‘And I replied and commented saying yes we could do that’. When are you free I said and ‘Shukoor replied and said tomorrow i’m free Tim’. So I thought that because there has been a lot on kahawia being caught at the waimakariri miver mouth it is where the salt water meets the fresh water from the river. And so I said in the morning we will meet and my house and get started then and get you a rod and reel to use. And at 7 o’clock in the morning standing at my door was Shukoor and I commented come inside you must be quite cold. ‘YES I AM thank you’.  Are you ready to go fishing because i’ve already got the gear ready jump into the car and we will head off. And 20 minutes later we arrived and I had pre rigged the rods and first cast for Dad, Shukoor, Max and I we all got kahawai!!
10 Cast later 10 fish later. And this happened all day so after maybe 70 fish each we had had enough.
